Baltimore Is ‘Dragging Its Feet’ to Bring Justice to Assaulted Citizen

Per the first amendment, we the people are allowed to peacefully assemble and protest. The elderly gentlemen in the article were then assaulted by a younger man, unprovoked, and the assailant has yet to be properly held accountable for his actions. This is not justice, nor mercy. It was my intention to bring attention to this matter as a Marylander, and I hope that we can learn from what is happening over there and prevent it from happening here in Southern Maryland.

Don’t let St. Mary’s County turn into Baltimore.

And, if anyone is curious as to WHY I altered a few of the terms employed, it is because if I say, "beaten pro-lifer," the story becomes politically charged. (I shared this story elsewhere and got flagged for being "political," fortunately I was able to thoughtfully explain my reasoning). And if the color of skin of the individuals were mentioned, it would devolve into a racial dispute, probably. While context is important, let us try to lead with the important stuff first, that one man violated another man's rights and safety unprovoked, and has yet to be held accountable, then delve into the particulars. Hopefully people will be able to see past the rhetoric into the heart of the matter.

Unfortunately, certain words remain "trigger" words, we all have a bias and a lens with which we pre-judge the world around us. Call it a prejudice, call it a value-system, we all have it. It is important to recognize it, and to acknowledge that not everyone has the same one as yours, and then, insofar as it is up to you, to harmoniously bear with patience the arduous task of dismantling the "triggers." I'm guilty of it, and the kneejerk reaction is a real phenomenon. I think if more people stopped to have a quiet conversation with themselves before reacting outwardly, a lot of conflicts like this would lessen.

In any case, we the people need to be vigilant, and strive to prevent the slipping away of civic virtues from society. Of course that begins with the individual practicing it in private, personal life. However, that private, personal individual needs to pluck up the nerve to enter the public sphere and live out those civic virtues, speaking out against matters of injustice and incivility, like this, and against the most vulnerable among us, and risk getting tackled to the ground, beaten and bloodied by a man half our age. And so, when reason and civility fail, we need enforcement to keep the peace in line with our civic virtues. Peace, without strength, is merely weakness. Mercy, without justice, is merely enablement, and those who allow it will rot out a society while thinking and claiming they are doing it a favor.

Is it too late to remove the rot from St. Mary's County? Not while there are still citizens who strive for what is good, right, and true. Those who do what God blesses will be blessed. In the words of John Quincy Adams, "Duty is ours, results are God's." It is time to do our part, while petitioning and trusting in God for His.

Isaiah 55:11 NKJV

"So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;

It shall not return to Me void,

But it shall accomplish what I please,

And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it."
