A Strong but Limited Government

Letter to SOMD region's counties.

The beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term has gained significant momentum. Promises made, promises kept. But can these promises be upheld? So far, the vast majority of these commitments have been initiated through executive orders. However, future administrations can easily revoke these orders with the stroke of a pen, rendering them temporary. Open border policies could be reinstated, potentially leading to an uptick in illegal immigration, human trafficking, and dangerous drugs entering our country once again. Alternatively, they could reverse the elimination of redundant, unnecessary, and wasteful government agencies or restore federal funding to organizations that permit males to compete in female sports. So, how can “We the People” help secure these temporary gains, especially in tackling the federal government’s rampant waste, fraud, and abuse?

“It is not tyranny we desire; it’s a just, limited federal government.”

Alexander Hamilton

The Founding Fathers knew the federal government would outgrow its original design. However, they would be appalled to learn of its current size: 3 million employees, a Federal deficit of 2 trillion dollars, and a national debt of over 36 trillion dollars.

“If men were angels, no government would be necessary.”

James Madison

Future generations bear the burden of our federal government's reckless and irresponsible spending, and we have no one to blame but ourselves. Right now, we have a rare opportunity to correct this mistake.

“Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil, in its worst state, an intolerable one.”

Thomas Paine

Here is the good news: The Founding Fathers wrote Article V into the U.S. Constitution with remarkable wisdom and foresight. It states, “On the application of the Legislatures of two-thirds of the several states, a convention shall be called for proposing amendments” which “shall be valid, as part of this Constitution, when ratified”

by “three-fourths of the several states.”

“I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic g

overnment; it is always oppressive.”

Thomas Jefferson

This is the “escape clause” from a powerful and oppressive federal government. Our government works for us, “We the People.” The US Constitution restricts the government, not “We the People.” The federal government has been operating unconstitutionally for far too long by usurping powers that belong to the states. “We the People” recognize this. Therefore, the Article V Convention of States (COS) movement was founded over a decade ago. The COS platform aims to:

1. Impose fiscal restraints on the federal government.

2. Limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.

3. Place term limits on Congress and federal officials.

Thus far, 19 states have passed the COS resolution. Thirty-four states are required to hold the COS Convention, and thirty-eight states are required to ratify any amendments.
